Following the LOG4GREEN meeting in Odessa in September 2013, a joint workshop was carried out with representatives of the Odessa National Maritime University (ONMU), and the Center for Logistics and Traffic (ZLV) of the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) addressing university staff, lecturers and students of the management master program of ONMU20. To intensify their relationship, the university representatives have signed an official Memorandum of Understanding for Academic Exchange at the beginning of the workshop.

September 2013, 09:00-16:00
Odessa National Maritime University, in Odessa/Ukraine
Organising Team: Rector Prof. Dr. Iryna V. Morozova, Prof. Mykhaylo Postan and Vera Baryshnikova of ONMU

The Workshop: „Interdisciplinary Science – Research, Management & Structural Innovations in a Changing Society” was chaired by Prof. DSc. Mykhaylo Postan (Head of the Chair “Management and Marketing in Maritime Transport” at ONMU) and Klaus Krumme (Executice Director of the Center for Logistics and Traffic at UDE).The objective was to enable significant mentoring  and collaboration relationships between the universities related to strategic subjects of the LOG4GREEN project and to address the necessary strategic shift of academia to enable new developments on the interface of logistics (science) and sustainability (related also to regional issues and interregional tasks). The workshop gave insight into state of the art inter- and transdisciplinary work in the international science community. Since traditional achievement of the science community seems no longer to be an adequate response or feedback in concern of  the rising complexity of globalized societal, economic and ecological change processes,  contemporary and emerging concepts of research, management and structural concepts for the overall organization of university-based science has been presented. Core questions have been addressed:

  • How can complex challenges be mirrored in modern research approaches beyond disciplinary borders?
  • How can such concepts be transferred into new academic structures and institutionalizations and how can they enrich the traditional science system?
  • What kind of management approaches do such innovative structures successfully cover and do they also portray the complex content sphere behind it?
  • Are there good practice cases that can serve as a first orientation and how can scientific institutions mobilize such new ideas in their institutional frameworks?

To make potential developments more concrete and tangible, Klaus Krumme has exemplified such questions in the context of a science perspective on logistics and supply chain management. The success case of the Centre for Logistics and Traffic at the University of Duisburg-Essen was explained, including its strong positive impact on the regional academic, economic and social surroundings.

Logistics offers huge potential for interdisciplinary work and can also leverage some crucial innovations in the socioeconomic system towards a truly sustainable development. That is the reason why logistics is a fruitful area for new ties between the academic world (with new ideas on how to make the socioeconomic environment more sustainable) and the “outer” actors like companies, public authorities, and civil movements to build up new cooperative and collaborative settings. Such settings offer new dimensions of progress, both for the academics and the economic and societal environment.
